About 154 Km long canyon carved by the river Charyn through many layers of various kinds of sedimentary formations. The most ancient ones of them have age about 12 million years. In some places, the height of the vertical cliffs of the canyon reaches 300 meters. The canyon is located 195 km to the East from Almaty city, approximately in the middle of the distance from this city to Sino- Kazakh border. It is largely contained within the Charyn National Park, which one was established in 2004. The variety of the landscapes of the Charyn canyon caused an adequate variety of species of animals and vegetation. There are growing up in Charyn National Park about 1500 species of vegetation. There is a grove of relic ash-trees, near the lower (the Northern one) bridge, which one has remained since the Ice Age time.

In Charyn National Park are nesting about 103 species of the birds, are occuring 62 species of the mammals (17 of them are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan) and 25 species of the reptiles. The most explored part of this canyon is located between the bridge over the river Charyn on the road Almaty-Kegen (South) and the bridge over the river Charyn on the road Almaty-Khorgos (North).

Sightseeing opportunities abound on Kazakhstan travel itineraries, from the scenic mountains, parks, and cathedrals to famous landmarks. Almaty is known for its city squares and cathedrals, including the Zenkov Cathedral, which was finished in 1907 and built entirely of wood. Also known as Ascension Cathedral, the Zenkov is the second-tallest wooden building in the world. This colorful cathedral survived the 1910 earthquake, and after the Russian Revolution it became a cultural and historic museum.

Today, the Zenkov church enjoys its restored status of a Russian Orthodox Church. The cathedral is located in Panfilov Park in Almaty Kazakhstan.
