Samuil’s Fortress is a fortress in the old town of Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia. It was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire during the rule of Samuil in the middle-ages. Today, this historical monument is a major tourist attraction and was renovated in 2003.

According to recent excavations by Macedonian archaeologists, it was alleged that this fortress was built on the place of an earlier fortification, dated to 4th century B.C., which was probably built by king Phillip II of Macedon

National Park of Mavrovo

There are many other places of archaeological interest throughout the country. Some highlights of Macedonia travel include the several national parks, including Mavrovo National Park, which has stunning lake views and several gorges, rivers, waterfalls, and caves.

The highest mountain peaks in Macedonia are all found in the National Park of Mavrovo, located in the western-central edge of the country. Sara, Deshad and Bistra are some of these peaks and they are topped by the imposing Mountain Korab (2,764 meters or 9,069 feet high). Not only do these mountains provide magnificent visual landscapes, they also offer some of the best skiing courts in the Balkans.

Mavrovo’s impressive forests contain more than 100 rare species of trees and its hilltops are rich in wild teas and herbs that can be easily gathered by hand. Lake Mavrovo which is located just beneath the ski center makes the National Park of Mavrovo a very popular weekend resort all year round.
