If you’re looking for an all-inclusive resort experience in Tunisia, look no further than Port el Kantaoui. A town built expressly for the purpose of attracting tourists, Port el Kantaoui is a tourist resort town located just six miles north of Sousse on the central Tunisian coast, in an area known as the Sahel, and together with Djerbe is one of the most popular attractions in the country. Although equipped with modern buildings and amenities, the entire town has been built in the traditional Tunisian style, with bright white buildings, narrow cobbled streets and archways, and quays lit by lamplight at night. The Port el Kantaoui Tunisia beaches are an ideal place for vacationers to get their fill of the sun and waves on the azure Mediterranean.

The focus of the resort town is the large artificial marina that harbors luxury yachts and sailboats, and it is the point of departure for many water activities such as water-skiing, jet-skiing, sailing, and glass-bottom boat cruises. This resort is not the best way to see authentic Tunisia, but many who arrive for a Port el Kantaoui holiday find it difficult to leave its pleasures and comforts.

El Jem Tunisia is famous for its grand Roman amphitheater and still surviving structures from the golden age of the city. Located in present day Mahdia, Tunisia, the ruins are some of the best in the country, and like the ruins of Leptis Magna in Libya, they provide great insight into Roman power in North Africa. The ruins are surrounded by a modern town that has sprung up in the area, which creates a great contrast between past and present, and also allows travelers to combine their history lessons with fine hotels and meals at modern restaurants.

Although the majority of the ancient city still lies beneath the sand and is waiting to be excavated, El Jem is a must-see stop on your visit to Tunisia.

Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa and is located on the Mediterranean coast directly south of Italy and Malta.

Northern Tunisia

Those planning to travel to Tunisia will find the country rich in history as well as in sparkling golden beaches, and the beach hotels and resorts are fast becoming some of the biggest tourist attractions of the country. Resorts such as Djerba and Tabarka offer soft sand beaches, crystal-clear Mediterranean waters, and a variety of water activities, while their excellent restaurants offer the best in Tunisian cuisine.

Tunisia has a fascinating history, with diverse peoples including the Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, and in more recent centuries, the Spanish and the French, all having inhabited this small North African country in the past. One of the most famous historical sights to see when you travel to Tunisia is the ruin of the ancient city of Carthage, one of the major empires of the ancient world.

The city and its founder, the mythical princess Dido, were immortalized in Virgil’s poem, the Aeneid. Today these ruins are located just nine miles from the capital city of Tunis and are a must-see on Tunisia holidays. Punic (Carthaginian) and Roman ruins can be seen, as well as ancient baths, houses, temples, and shrines. History buffs on vacation in Tunisia will cherish a visit to the internationally renowned Bardo Museum in Tunis, which showcases amazing exhibits about the ancient world, including Roman, Islamic, and Punic artifacts, as well as an impressive collection of mosaics, such as the unique portrait of Virgil.
